Lock-in period

A lock-in period is a minimum stretch of the tenancy that both sides commit to, usually at the start of an eleven month agreement.

( SCROLL ↓ )

Neither side can give notice and walk away during this stretch without paying a penalty, usually the rent for the rest of the lock-in or the notice period, whichever the agreement names. In Bengaluru, three to six months is a commonly quoted lock-in for a residential home, inside the eleven month term, though the exact length is whatever the agreement says, not a fixed rule. We point out the lock-in period before signing, not after someone wants to leave early.

A term is defined from the statute or from the practice, with the source named beside it. Where Bengaluru's practice differs from the law, the page says so rather than choosing one.

Send this page to whoever you are moving with; a home is usually chosen by two people at eleven at night. The next step is one message to the desk with the budget, the size and the office.
